How to get to
Canterbury

The 2010 Championships are
being held on the University campus, Canterbury,
Kent, CT2 7NZ. The city centre is about
10 minutes away by car.
Canterbury is located in east Kent,
about 55 miles (89 km) east-southeast of London.
The coastal towns of Herne Bay and Whitstable
are 6 miles (10 km) to the north, and
Faversham is 8 miles (13 km) to the
northwest. Nearby villages include
Rough Common,
Sturry and
Tyler Hill. The civil parish of
Thanington Without is to the southwest; the
rest of the city is unparished.
Harbledown,
Wincheap and Hales Place are suburbs of the
city.
The city is on the
River Stour or Great Stour, flowing from its source at
Lenham north-east through
Ashford to the
English Channel at
Sandwich.
Bus Travel around
Canterbury
There are regular buses
between Canterbury City Centre and the
University of Kent Campus in Canterbury, passing
close to both Canterbury rail stations. Out of
term time, the
UNibUS runs approximately every 15 minutes
and The Triangle (routes 4&6) serves the
University every 30 minutes, during the day
Monday to Saturday.
A day ticket, valid for
unlimited travel between the City and the
University, is available for £2.50 and a weekly
ticket for £7. Both can be bought from bus
drivers at the start of your first journey.
There are also additional tickets for those that
need to travel further within Canterbury or into

High speed train service to
Canterbury from London
It is easier than ever to get
to Canterbury from London now that a
new high speed service launched in December
2009 is available from southeastern railways.
This dramatically reduces journey times by
travelling up to 140mph. The new service running
from St. Pancras station can cut the journey
time to Canterbury to just
57 minutes.

between Kent and central London faster than ever
and make easy connections for journeys across
the UK and Europe. It would be quite feasible to
travel from London to the British Chess
Championships at the University each day.

London Underground and
getting to St Pancras International
Transport for London provides
comprehensive and detailed information about travel options
in the Capital. So if you are looking for ways to travel to
Canterbury via St. Pancras, the TfL website is a great place
to start.
You can also

from and you will receive instant feedback
about your journey.

Motorways & Trunk Roads
Kent is served by an
extensive motorway and trunk road network with
over 200km of motorway and 200km of trunk road.
The network provides the main strategic highway
links from Kent to London and the rest of the
United Kingdom and direct access to key
destinations in the County including the Channel
Tunnel and the port of Dover.

Canterbury campus maps to download
The Canterbury campus is
built on 300 acres of parkland half an hour’s
walk from Canterbury city centre. Residential,
teaching and administrative buildings are
surrounded by green open spaces, fields and
woods.
The campus is self-contained
and includes student accommodation, a library,
sports centre, theatre, nightclub, eating places
and bars, shops, bookshop, medical centre, day
nursery, public access computer rooms, chapel,
launderettes and bus stops.
